As armor protection is based on high-strength and
super-high-strength materials, the issues of mechanical treatment
of such materials has always been critical in designing new armor
structures.
NII Stali has also been dealing with the problems
for many years and developed a number of unique methods of high-strength
materials treatment.
Some of the methods which can be used for civil purposes
are described below.
MAGNET-PULSE PROCESSING OF MATERIALS (MPPM)
The MPPM plant was patented
in the USSR. The inductor was
awarded with the Gold Medal of
"Brussel-Eureka 2000" exhibition.

press tool and samples

Different types of inductors
Samples of joint parts made of
heterogeneous materials
(steel, stainless steel, copper,
aluminum, plastic)
|
|
Capabilities of MPPM:
- Stamping, punching, straightening, drawing of plane and
three-dimensional parts from sheet metal materials
- Flaring, beading, sizing, squeezing, expansion of cylindrical
and other shape products; welding, press-fitting; fixed
and sealed joints in both homogeneous (metal-metal) and
heterogeneous hard-to-join materials
- Build-up of special structural coatings of powder materials
on plane and cylindrical surfaces
- Cleaning of pipe-lines and reservoirs from pollution;
deburring; destruction of metal-glass structures,and other
processes with the use of electro-magnetic field energy
and electric discharge in liquids
- Stenciled embossing on foil or thin sheets

DRILLING OF HARD-TO-PROCESS STEELS AND ALLOYS
|
Used at machining of hard-to-process
steels and alloys with the hardness
range of 50-60 HRc.

|
|
The method is based on the effect of metal
softening in the area of contact with the cutting tool when
using a special active media (AM). The method allows to
substantially reduce resistance to cutting while the strength
properties of the processed work piece are preserved.
Patent of RF No. 2094175 dtd 14.02.1995
Main features
- Possibility of processing steels and alloys with
50-60 HRc.
- Energy saving by factors of 2-10
- Increase of machining rate by factors of 2-20
- Cutting tool wear reduction by factors of 2-10
- Availability of all AM components in Russia
- Recyclability of AM
- No destructive effect of AM on the cutting tool

EXPLOSIVE DISASSEMBLY OF ARMORED VEHICLES
 |
The method of explosive disassembly provides the following:
-
unification for different armored
equipment;
-
elimination of necessity to use
hard-to-get materials (acetylene, oxygen);
-
no need in operators working
under unhealthy conditions;
-
low cost of the operations;
-
minimization of the explosive
quantity due to a specific arrangement and pattern
of initiation of different explosive charges.
|
Main specifications
- explosive consumption: 100 kg;
- main components spread radius: 10…15 m;
- seismic effect radius: 30…60 m;
- radius of dangerous scattering of small fragments
and air wave propagation: 100…150 m;
- normative radius of the safe zone: 600…800 m;
- labor consumption: 5…10 man-hours per item.
