NII STALI has been engaged in development of materials since 1942. The main focus has always been different types of armor steels, high-strength structural steels for running gear and engines of all kinds of transport. Later the company went into development of high-temperature materials, fireproof materials, antiradiation materials.

The range of armor materials has also expanded. Along with standard armor steels and light alloys such materials as ceramics, ballistic fibers and composites are widely used nowadays.
